How often should I maintain my machine?

One of the things I have always been interested to hear is my client’s opinions on how often they should take care of my machine. Corporate world aside, I have heard all kinds of figures for this. Some people believe that a computer could go on for months or years at a time without anyone looking at it. Yet, I also know people who take care of their computer once every two weeks.

In the course of my practice, I have found that a computer needs to be maintained once every two months or so on average. In most cases, a computer can go for about two months without any hiccups. By that point there start to be areas of the machine that need service.

The unfortunate thing, is that computers which need help often don’t alert the user of the machine that they do. They just chug along, doing things for the owner of the machine until the owner realizes that something really bad just happened and the entire computer collapses.

In many ways this situation is similar to your car. Something could be wrong with it for months, but if you don’t take the time to get the car checked up on, what was a $20 part replacement can turn into hundreds of wasted dollars all because you didn’t take the time to check out the car.

Computers can do all kinds of funny things when they go for too long without someone who knows how to heal a computer’s wounds checking up on it. Some examples are:

  1. The computer starts to freeze up on you.
  2. Software you use everyday which worked fine before suddenly begins to start crashing on you all the time.
  3. Some files go missing and you aren’t sure what happened but you ignore it. A month later, all of your data evaporates into thin air.
  4. Your computer gets slower and slower and slower and eventually starts giving you strange errors.

The ironic thing is that you likely wouldn’t notice your computer failing, but a trained technician can see the signs of a strained computer long before they cause any kind of damage to your system or your workflow.

So whats the bottom line? Always make sure to have someone look at your system at least once every two months.
